Pandhyada Padakka Aadlu Pedakka

This is a 20-minute puppetry play in Kannada based on a folktale. It was performed on 22nd February 2015 in a van. The performance was done using life-size puppets created by Padmavati Rao. The puppeteers were Ajey Preetham, Chethana Nagraj, Havish Sreenath and Padmavati Rao. The play was also performed as a curtain raiser to the International Children’s Theatre Festival in 2015 as a platform performance at Ranga Shankara.

The play written by Chethana Nagraj was first performed in the rear of a van in the slums of East Bengaluru with the objective of bringing people out of their homes in order to influence them to get their children to the health centre where they could be administered the polio drops. The recorded turn out in these slums in earlier years was not satisfactory. However, with the approach used people and children turned out and took infants for the polio immunisation of their own free will.

The approach used was entertaining without any didactic rendering of the message. On the contrary parallels in the story were offered for the people to make their own inferences and use their wisdom in their own interest.

The play was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Indira Nagar, Bengaluru.
