m.i.l.a.p. 2019 – Turning a New Page: Text, Voice, Image
Creative Expressions in the Digital World
November 9-10

“I would like to put a stop to this movement toward reading on computers, but it seems that nobody can do this.”

Günter Grass

Through word processors and electronic devices, digitality has sneaked its way into the world of creative expressions. Unparalleled access to technology, and the internet, in particular, has propelled digitalization of literature, theatre, cinema, art, music or any creative enterprise for that matter. Creativity is no more hampered by static letters or images, but is encouraged to emerge anew by using text, moving images with 3-D effects and sounds. While this has opened possibilities of new forms of storytelling, the digital era has come to curtail the imagination of the audience that was a part of the process of story-telling and in co-creating an environment for it.

We no longer have to turn the pages of a book, but the experience of reading has metamorphosed into the realm of ‘Kindle’ and ‘BookHub’ on mobile devices. Access to content is far more and easier than ever before. The reach is instantly global for a writer, unlike any other times. Internet being inherently democratic does not only provide easy way for access but also opportunities to create. Writers and artists – performing or visual – are now able to reach their audience instantaneously through various platforms though response received seldom goes beyond likes, shares, and thumbs-ups.

Despite multimedia story-telling possibilities, writers, editors, and publishers have often expressed discomfort with the digital medium. Some have lamented that ushering in the digital era spells trouble for the world of literature. Literary practices in this age are mired in the dilemma of an entirely novel dimension. With the barrier between the classical and the popular thinning out and the notion of canonical texts challenged by the emergence of a multiplicity of perspectives, the digital space is creating literary practices of the new age.

A discourse on understanding the ambivalence that exists in these experiences would be worth exploring. The potential of digitalization in the creative arts is yet to manifest in all its facets, and we are at the threshold of new forms of communication cutting across all genres of academia and entertainment. m.i.l.a.p 2019 will explore this idea of digitalization of creative expression through different programs.

  • Literary Meet with sessions centered around well-known authors and moderated by experts
  • Cultural Evenings to explore intersections of theatre, music, dance, and literature in the digital space
  • Book Fair where one can browse through and purchase books in traditional formats by various authors and publishers

All events will be held at Dr T M A Pai Halls, Manipal. We hope you will be able to visit us and be a part of this distinct journey as we delve into the impact of the digital world on the creative arts.
